About StarMetro
StarMetro is the City of Tallahassee's public transit system, proudly serving the community since December 3, 1973. It operates under federal and state regulations for transit agencies and provides millions of trips annually!
History
Transit in Tallahassee began with Cities Transit, which was a small chain of transit operators active in several cities. The City of Tallahassee purchased the Tallahassee franchise of Cities Transit in 1973 and named the new City department TalTran, launching service with a fleet of 21 buses. In 1977, the operations, maintenance, and administrative facility was built on Appleyard Drive.
In 1985, the central bus terminal, C.K. Steele Plaza, was constructed on the corner of Tennessee and Adams Streets and named for civil rights leader Reverend Dr. Charles Kenzie Steele, who played a pivotal role in the 1956 Tallahassee Bus Boycott.
In 2005, the agency was rebranded as StarMetro. StarMetro recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking half a century of providing safe, reliable, efficient, and accessible transit services.
Looking ahead, the Southside Transit Center, currently under construction, will be the first public transit center built in the community since C.K. Steele Plaza in the 1980s. This state-of-the-art facility will further StarMetro's commitment to providing accessible and sustainable transportation for all.
